WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

Dear All,

Does anyone know of some device that would enable me to WiFi stream media directly from an AV input source (say: cable box or DVD player or VCR) to the home WiFi network (to be received by other devices on the Network, such as a WiFi-enabled TV set, or a Laptop)?

Just to ensure clarity of my inquiry: the device's input should be -- at least 3*RCA (Audio L/R + Composite Video) or -- even better for the Video part -- S-Video or RGB or even HDMI, while its output should go to an Ethernet J45 (LAN) connector as well as to WiFi.

Thanks in advance for an enlightening reply,

Eric

Thanks smakh, but this answer is too laconic even for me ...

Could you please elaborate?

Thanks again,

Eric

for you to use Google, or your favorite search engine if different, to search for Place Shifting.

I just did and found a number of hits, which may or may not take you further in this.

Good luck.

Thanks for the clarification Mark.

Seemingly however (in view of the answer) my inquiry was misunderstood:

1. PlaceShifting, as implemented by SlingMedia (and other competing products) takes indeed an AV input but -- eventually -- broadcasts its signal to the "Cloud" (Internet), making it accessible from anywhere in the World, to whoever might know the credentials for the specific box;
Such an approach has at least two problems:

a. Media purchased (by license) for PERSONAL use may become accessible to "the World", thus infringing on the license's clauses;

b. The quality of the signal received eventually, is dependent on the upload/download speed of the connection available to the Internet (both at the "Sling" side and at the Viewer side), which is mostly MUCH lower than the average speed used on a WiFi LAN between the Router and the various items (including the Sling Box and the -- possibly WiFi-enabled -- TV-Set) connected to it.

2. The type of device I am looking for should stream on the [WiFi] LAN and ONLY on it, and for the TV-Set to "see" the stream there should be no need of a PC in ON status on the LAN - just the device, the Router and the TV-Set itself.

Hope this does a better job of expressing the type of device needed.

Thanks again for your help,

Eric

Wireless HDMI

Now you need one more thing. The box you get the inputs encoded to HDMI. Greffen did that before and the downside is the price.

Can be done but I found that once folk learned how much this would cost, they either screamed they were being ripped or that how could such sell at that price.

I can answer part of that. Where there is a need.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for pointing this one out for me.

Regretfully however, Gefen's (I guess that's the company you actually meant) Wireless HDMI is NOT what I had in mind ...

For one thing, Gefen's solution needs dedicated transmitter AND receiver; my request is for a transmitter that would be a member of the local [WiFi] LAN, allowing ANY other member of the LAN have access to its data.

On the other hand, Gefen's solution is HDMI only (possibly component too); my need is for a device where these options would be great, but support for the more basic Composite input would exist as well.

So ... the search is on ...

Thanks again Bob and Happy Weekend,

Eric

I'm getting a little lost on this now.

Try this. Reply to your top post and spell it out again.
