International Wireless Internet Help

We are traveling to Egypt, Dubai, and the Maldives beginning 3/17/2011. We will be abroad for 3 weeks and would like to be able to utilize our lap top while traveling. We did go to Verizon, but the options were questionable and they stated with use time could get extremely expensive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know something we don't....because at this point we pretty much know very little as far as what wireless products are out there and the coverage in different parts of the world.

Thanks for any help!!

Verizon is the wrong company to be talking to when you even think about international. They run mostly CDMA based stuff and almost everyone else in the world run GSM.

Your best and cheapest method is to use wireless from your hotels.

You could get a plan from say ATT that uses GSM but the roam charges are outrageous. The standard way many companies do this is to buy unlocked phones/data cards and buy prepaid plans in the countries. These are similar to the plans you can get at walmart in the US. The key is to buy a device that supports the frequency of the country you are going to I think egypt is 900 and 2100. I think there are only about 4 so you can get a device that supports all. Then the challenge is to find a prepaid vendor in each country. It is not hard to find the vendors they are all over the place it is finding one that offers good rates. You don't want to buy it from places like the shops in the hotel you need to find similar to walmart. You should be able to place the sim in any unlocked device and follow the instructions to activate it.

Still I would try to find a option to use wireless lan rather than any form of cell service, you could also save lots on phone calls by using skype or whatever to call back to the US.
