memory upgrade to vista premium 32 bit

Memory Upgrade - I'm running vista premium 32bit and My computer is supposed to be able to recognize 3 gigs of memory, it came with 2 gigs. However, upon trying to add another gig of memory the system wouldn't recognize it. Checking the mother board I noticed that although there are 4 memory slots, only 2 look as if they're connected. My question is, if I add a 2 gig stick to the 1st slot, would the system then recognize the 3 gigs? 2 in 2st and 1 in the 2nd slot! Please advise --- Thank you Tony

With the 32 bit memory map it is possible in some machines to achieve 2.1GB RAM when there is 3.0GB installed. Why this is, is well discussed and continues to confound owners.

As to what stick goes where and compatibility questions the simple way to check is to head to crucial.com and see what sticks they offer.

-> It's a shame that discussing why a memory upgrade failed rarely results in getting incompatible memory working. This is why, for most folk it's best to get it from crucial.

The motherboard manual for your PC will tell you what configurations of what sticks in what slots are supported. You forgot to include the relevant pages of that manual in your post, so it's impossible to tell.

Thank you for the advise. I did get identical memory with the same speed but like I stated that which connects to memory slots to the system wasn't connected to 2 of the 4 slots. That's why I asked if I put a 2 gig in one of the slots if it would work so I wouldn't have to replace the entire motherboard. Plus, the ACER was a refurb! So will the system recognize a 2 gig in one of the memory slots?

Thanks Tony

There were no manual that came with this ACER, it was a refurb. However, my question is will a 2gig work in one of the 2 slots that work? Please advise?

You provide no clue as to the PC involved here. Help us, help you by providing the details. In most cases reviewing the manual or visiting the PC support website may shed some light on the topic. The other posters cover what also needs to be done.

There was no manual with the desktop when I received it and when I contacted the ACER website tech they allegated to my having to upgrade the motherboard. Never actally stating why. My question is will the system recognize up to 2 gigs in one of the 2 available slots and a 1 gig in the other? So I can avoid having to uprade the mother board. Thank You, Tony

number it's really difficult to recommend anything. Like HP Pavilion a1620N

If you can find the specific info ...you can check the system DOCs on the ACER website and check memory configuration at sites like CRUCIAL.COM. Without it ...we're just guessing and generalizing.
