New order

Hey guys, I placed an order in the UK for an i5 M11x on the 18th March and have an estimated delivery of the 14th April.

Is it normal for delivery to take to take 4 weeks these days?

As you can tell, I am not good at waiting

Reply 1 : New order

UK as well - My i7 took 5 days from Sat (order) to Thu (delivery), but like yours started out with about a month on the initial estimate which didn't change til it shipped.

Reply 2 : New order

Sometimes yes it can be a while but most will ship before expected delivery dates

No, since the 270's here are actually from last month while these are newer...However the branch for these leaked drivers is 270 instead of 267.So it's up to you.

I didn't see it listed in available .inf's. so probably not unless you mod the .inf or get it from LV2Go.

No video from PC to Yamaha RX-V665 receiver! Help Please!

Recently my PC quit showing video(still does audio) through my RX-V665 receiver. About 6 months ago i had my radeon 5770 (hdmi) connected to my yamaha receiver and everything worked fine. Now through a catalyst software update video no longer works. I have reinstalled the previous software and made sure it was running 1080p 60hz and still no video(i tried other resolutions as well)!!!! I have the receiver running to my Mitsubishi WD-65837 tv. Any help would be Unbelievably greatly appreciated!

Reply 1 : No video from PC to Yamaha RX-V665 receiver! Help Please!

Have you tried doing a factory reset on the receiver and re-assigning inputs(?)

Also, what happens when you eliminate the receiver and connect the PC via HDMI to the HDTV(?)

Toshiba 14-inch USB Mobile LCD Monitor

I notice that it specifically indicates compatibility with PC Win OS's, but does not mention OSX.

If it works as a fully functional extension screen, I can think of some uses for my MBA.

edit: I called Toshiba, and the person to whom I spoke indicated that it would work with OS X, but were unsure as to any limitations as to the monitor options within OS X (i.e. Mirroring versus desktop extension)

Reply 1 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

Not exactly an answer to your question, but I know several people that use the Mimo USB monitors with Macs.

Reply 2 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

OSX does support some USB graphics cards. This is a USB graphics card plus external monitor.

One thing I would be worried about is how much power this draws from the USB. Toshiba does not mention this at all. Cant imagine that it runs on the 500mA. The Air's super drive also requires more power than 500mA so the Air should be able to handle it.

Reply 3 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

It mentions a 'USB y cable' on that Toshiba page, which will be for power reasons, same as the 2.5" HDDs that have them.

I think the Mimos come with the same deal, so I assume the Toshiba is the same as those in that if enough power is available from a single port it would be fine just plugged into one.

Mac laptops generally have decent USB power rails.

Reply 4 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

It is really hard to use the a Y cable with a macbook air since it only has a single usb port on each of the sides. Most y cables I have seen are not long enough to reach all the way around.

Reply 5 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

Yes, it is odd that they don't show the power requirement.

In the demo video, they are "obvious" in that they stress that only one of the Y-cable connectors is required for operation. But that then leads to the obvious question, that they don't answer...why in the heck do you have a Y-Cable then?

Reply 6 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

Oh right (I don't have a MBA).

So it's either use an extension for one leg of it, or hope it's one of those y cables you can sorta peel apart.

Or, hopefully the Mac will power it off one USB port.

Laptops vary in how much current they will supply out of the USB port. One cable is power + data, the other will only have the power rail connected. It's a bit of a hack but often better than having to take another PSU.

Also, it has the option of an external adapter, so you could use that along with a single USB cable (although I appreciate this means carting round more stuff, which is presumably what you're trying to avoid since you bought an Air!). But they're technically within their rights to say it.

Edit: I found this, although I'm not sure how much use it is.

Reply 7 : Has anyone tried using this on a MB

In the detailed spec PDF:

http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...23ulc3spec.pdf

It states ' FCC, CE, DisplayLink Certified'

There are DisplayLink drivers for OsX:

DisplayLink: Mac OS X Software

Also it says 'Add a Toshiba AC Adapter for maximum brightness (PA3743U-1ACA)'

This could explain the Y cable. It works with one but with 2 ports you get more brightness. But thats just speculations on my part.

Laptop Periodically Loses Internet connection.

Lately I have been having problems holding an internet connection on my laptop. The problem only occurs when the laptop is not plugged in to power, when it is plugged in and charging, everything is fine. The internet access icon in my system tray never shows any sign of something being wrong (one would think the yellow yield triangle would appear or it would display that I have lost connection to my wi-fi). Yet my browser or any other program using the internet (ie games, skype) cease to function. The only method I have been able to use to fix it is to put the laptop to sleep, which takes abnormally long when doing so to fix this problem, and then powering it back up and either waiting for the problem to occur again or plugging it in.

Sorry for the wall of text. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions to try.

Thank You.

Acer Extensa 4420 won't power up

Bought off Ebay, formatted C installed XP Pro and all Acer drivers, worked fine for a week, now when I try to boot it only comes on for a short time with no start up screen showing, shuts off on AC or DC

Reply 1 : Acer Extensa 4420 won't power up

See if it's under warranty, if not then contact the seller and tell them of the problem, since it's only been a week you can possibly file a complaint with paypal saying the laptop is faulty.

Reply 2 : Acer Extensa 4420 won't power up

It is a known motherboard issue, the batch of Extensa 4420 manufactured in late 2008 had defective motherboard installed. Just call Acer repair and send in the computer as I assume you are still under warranty. I just got back mine with MB replaced, everything works fine now.

Reply 3 : Acer Extensa 4420 won't power up

Have exact same problem. Very frustrating. Will try BB to see if they will take it back.

i have the same problem with a 5420 made in late 07 bought from best buy too bad it isnt under warranty still i got it to turn on once then after a few days it died again

Hi . I have a extensa 4420 which I bought last year and recently I was having same problem like many of you. When I turn it on it would flash hdd and cd light and after few seconds it shut down . Sometimes it would power up but more frequently it didn't. I red many posts and tried all possible but nothing worked . So I thought maybe there is a problem with CMOS battery . So as a last resort I took whole notebook completely a part. Look at the battery model , recheck ALL possible connectors to motherboard and pushed on them to make sure there are properly seated. After that a have put everything back together and tried to power it up . It came up right away without a problem. It has been two days and not a single problem. I tried to power it on and off more than 30 times ever since and it still works . That tells me that ether CMOS-battery or some connector to motherboard or maybe even memory was not seated properly . It may have got lose carrying laptop around. I hope it will help at least to some of you .

Please be careful if you decide to take the notebook a part .

I'm having a problem where when my laptop (same model), after going into sleep mode, when powering back up to resume, it loses track of time (goes back to January 2006)....checked the BIOS which also seems to be changed to this time...I change the time back to current time then restart computer it is fine until going back into sleep mode which then sometimes problem reoccurs. now thinking could also be a problem with the CMOS battery seat. Does this problem sound like similar or could be a cause of this. How do I get to the cmos battery to check it? Thanks.

You would be very suprised how effective a power reset is on any electronic device! Anything using a battery/source of power and has capacitors in it this will work for. Unplugging everything and discharging the device, usually by holding power button down, making sure no power source is installed (e.g. battery, power cable) for 30seconds and then plug it back in. I have had this work for many of my past owned laptops and worked for me when my old iPod locked up lol.

Compact, fast, easy digital camera?

Help, I am trying to find a compact digital camera that can keep up with my grandchildren and I can put it in my pocket, without getting too deep into my wallet. I do not want to carry around a large camera, but I want to take quality pictures in rapid succession. I would also like a nice optical zoom. Any recommendations?

Reply 1 : Compact, fast, easy digital camera?

This is one of the faster compact cameras available. It also has a 10x optical zoom lens. However, you should know there is no free lunch. All small cameras will struggle to get a good photo of fast movement indoors, because there isn't enough light. That's why bigger, more capable cameras exist.

5850 Flash Guide?

What happened to the 5850 bios flashing guide?? I could use it!

Reply 1 : 5850 Flash Guide?

1. Download the HP USB Key Utility: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 Download - EXTREME Overclocking

2. Download the Windows 98 system files: Windows 98 System Files Download - EXTREME Overclocking

3. Download Atiflash from techPowerUp! :: Download ATIFlash 3.79

4. Install the HP USB Key Utility

5. Launch the HP USB Key Utility and do the following:

- Insert your USB thumb drive.

- Select File system as "FAT32"

- Select Format Option as "Create a DOS bootable Disk..."

- Checkmark the box that says, "Quick Format"

- Locate the directory you extracted the Win98 files.

- Format the USB key using the the Win98 files.

6. make copy of your bios using gpu-z

4. use rbe to edit your vbios, then save to your usb stick, remember to add ".rom" at the end of your new bios name when saving. Also remember to save atiflash on the usb stick also.

7. Restart.

8. F12

9. Boot from USB

10. At command prompt... type in "atiflash -s 0 vbios.rom - this is to save the original bios

11. then type in "atiflash -p -fs 0 "newbios".rom - this will flash the new bios

FLASHING IS RISKY, so do so at your own risk.

Thanks inap. I wish there was a way to recover a bad flash but it seems to not post at all, even if I were to program something to boot off of USB and autorun the flash command.

Reply 3 : 5850 Flash Guide?

Yep, same thing when trying to save in RBE. I get an error, something to do with the subvendor id and it won't save. This is probably why the last flash borked.

Ahhhh, I was using the wrong RBE version. No wonder. Yeah, I already got a replacement video card. Trying to flash my stable over clocks so I don't have to keep using atitool but almost afraid to now after the first disaster

Reply 7 : 5850 Flash Guide?

@Inap, now that's the boiled down, condensed version of the process. LOL.

Reply 8 : 5850 Flash Guide?

It sure is. Still have the original problem though.

My 5850 stops at 300/400. powerplay enabled, tried it disabled and it does nothing. Basically, I have yet to see this thing go to 625/1000 under load. I used ATITool to artifact scan and GPUZ tells me the gpu load is 85%+.

Clocks still 300/400, I verified what GPUZ is telling me to what DXDIAG says and they both show correctly so I am left wondering if it is a problem with the 11.2 software. About to revert back to the Dell drivers tonight but kind of at a loss here....

Reply 9 : 5850 Flash Guide?

The stock 5850M caps out at 300/400 under 2 conditions -- 1) Stealth mode is enabled or 2) PowerPlay is disabled. It has nothing to do with the Cat 11.2 drivers.

Camcorder home movie back up

I recently purchased a Sony Blu ray burner to transfer my home movies from my Sony camcorder's hard drive.

I am a bit leery of having the only copy of the movie on DVD should something happen to the DVD.

What would anyone recommend for a second copy to keep as a back up? The hard drive on my camera holds 32G but I usually transfer at 20 or so so it will fit on the blank Blu ray DVD.
A large flash drive?
Thanks

Reply 1 : Camcorder home movie back up

Options:

1) Burn a second Blu Ray disc identical to the first. Store the other disc somewhere else - preferably in another building... state... Setting up a directory system and numbering plan to keep track of what is on which disc would be beneficial.

2) Flash memory is volatile and not suitable for long-term archiving (there is difference between "back up" and "archive"). A RAID1-capable Network Attached Storage (NAS) system with hot-swappable hard drives will have at least two hard disc drives with identical files. You copy only once; the RAID1 optionality copies to the other "mate" drive. Hard disc drives can be in the multi-Terabyte range. When the drive(s) fill(s), replace them with new drives. One drive stays with you, the other is sent/stored elsewhere. Sans Digital, Buffalo, D-Link, LG, NetGear and many others make suitable systems.

3) Get a digital tape deck (expensive) or HDV camcorder and use digital tape as the archive storage media. This means your computer needs to have a firewire port to connect to the digital tape deck (or miniDV tape HDV camcorder). The video would not be AVCHD compressed MTS files as you have today... basically, import the high definition video to a computer's video editor to decompress the video, then export to the miniDV tape as low-compression HDV format video. The digital tape becomes the "archive" and stored off-site.

There's at least one more, but it is computer network based and relies on commercial-grade DAT (or other digital tape - not miniDV) data systems back-up server implementations using a tape-media carousel that would normally be maintained by a network administrator.

How To Overclock The Ati 5650?

Hi all

I have a sony vaio ea 16fg

i5 520m @ 2.4ghz

ati 5650 1gb which is downclocked by sony to 450 mhz

so far i have tried two tools

ati gpu clock tool and MSI afterburner but no success

in afterburner when i change the core clock and memory clock it won't save that profile thus it can't be loaded everytime it changes to default value

and in ati gpu tool there is no effect after changing maybe this is the old version

Here are the default settings detected by these two tools

so any of you can provide a link for a perfect tool to overclock this 5650 to 650 and please provide suggestions how to do it

Reply 4 : How To Overclock The Ati 5650?

The last link was good for me too.

But the engine value is 99.99 and memory is 149.97 and it goes up only when gpu is used more.

Is that normal?

Should not be showing the maximum values of the card?

Second question... if i set the clock at higher values, gpu will stay at these values that i have set or lower when not so much power is needed?

99.99 and 149.97 is because PowerPlay is enabled in CCC..Disable it if you want but if it is enabled then it maximizes battery life..If you go gaming your clocks will be high as much you clocked it.

Reply 9 : How To Overclock The Ati 5650?

As above, it shows 150/150 because that's what ATI's Powerplay downclocks the GPU to when it's not in use. Just put the numbers you want in the two boxes, then click "Set Clocks". When you're done gaming, make sure you click the "Restore Default Clocks" button or Powerplay won't work and you'll be running full power all the time.

For Public Use: Reg Macbook or Air?

Im ordering a bunch of netbooks/laptops for public use in my retail business and we want to make Apple users happy too.

We're ordering Samsung 10.4" netbooks for the PC side.

So the Air is the better companion to those netbooks visually/style-wise. But is the Air durable enough for that public use? Or should I go the regular Macbook route and trade more clunkiness for (presumptive) durability?

Are there factors Im not considering?

Thanks for any/all assistance...

Reply 1 : For Public Use: Reg Macbook or Air?

I seriously doubt the standard macbook is any more durable than an Air... probably even less so... but its much cheaper to replace when someone breaks it.

Reply 2 : For Public Use: Reg Macbook or Air?

The MacBook Air (along with standard MacBook or MacBook Pro) is going to also be much more powerful than those Samsung 10" netbooks. You are looking at dinky Intel Atom processors and comparing them to ones that give you desktop-like performance. Its like comparing a bicycle to Ford Mustang.

The MacBook Air is going to be more portable when compared to the standard MacBook and likely more durable. The MBA is made of aluminum while the standard MB is plastic. Whether that is going to be an issue or not depends on how they will be used. You are ordering plastic netbooks so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

You should go with the MBA if you/they want something that is extremely portable yet more powerful than a netbook. The standard MB would be better if you are on a budget and require a built-in optical drive. You can also upgrade the RAM and hard drives in a standard MB while you have to configure the MBA on Apple's website as you cannot upgrade the RAM or SSD aftermarket.

That's certainly true. If Apple had a netbook equivalent, that's what we'd get.

otherwise, thank you both for the input. We prefer the look of the Air and if there is no significant durability issue vs standard macbook (as you both indicate)...then that's what we'll go with.

Reply 4 : For Public Use: Reg Macbook or Air?

If anything, the Air is going to be more durable simply because it is unibody aluminum. Essentially Apple takes a piece of aluminum and carves it out so that it takes the shape of the MBA casing. You are looking at three pieces for the casing: the bottom, the keyboard/top, and the display lid. I think the standard MB is similar just with plastic but aluminum is more durable anyway.

Out of curiosity are they to be placed on a table and locked in place with a tether or laptops that will move with people? It they are to be placed on a tether then go with a Macbook, if people will be carrying them around then go with an Air.

Locked in place or locked by wire. This mitigates some of the usual advantages of Air, but since durability vs a reg macbook is an apparent non-issue...the choice of Air is more about what fits in best with netbooks & looks sleekest.

Business thought would be don't give them any computer to make them comfortable. Give them something to get them curious enough to want to go home or back to office to do serious followup. After all typing on the touch screen would have its limitations to get them to go.

Also attach an industrial chain on them because if they are not tethered down they will fly.

Reality is that if you are giving away free wifi people will bring their own and just soak you for the freebie.

Do you have any recommendations? I found this one, but it looks very clunky. Style matters to us (unfortunately!).

RE: Ipad. We thought about Ipad vs. laptop as there are some very slick commercial-grade stainless angled picture frame holders that some of our partners are developing (lining them up 3-4 in a row would look great); but ultimately our customers will want to use a hard keyboard and maybe a UBS stick and do some other things other than surf...thus a netbook/laptop offers the best solution.

Reply 9 : For Public Use: Reg Macbook or Air?

I really think that keeping a MBA locked in place defeats the entire purpose behind it. You could buy a Mac Mini and a non-Apple monitor (about 23" in size) for the same price as an entry level 11.6" MBA. The entire point behind the MBA is to offer the Mac OS X experience in a device that is insanely portable while giving you desktop-like performance. Take the portability option out and you essentially have a desktop.

Might as well go with something else if the units aren't going to be taken out and are just going to sit there chained to a desk. The MBA doesn't even offer a built-in lock option so you would have to modify the unit also negating any sleek design aspects. Might as well just go with a Mac Mini and a 3rd party monitor if you really want Mac OS X or just save the money and buy a standard MacBook. Not taking a MBA out and physically attaching some type of wire to it defeats the entire purpose behind the MBA line and even gets rid of the whole looking sleek option.

Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

Hi there:

Since my speakers finally died I have bought and set-up 6 or 7 sets (Some highly recommended) but thought they were all terrible. I assumed it was the speakers but then I found an excellent store that was happy to pull them out of the box and let me listen in-store.

One pair was OUTSTANDING for 2.0 speakers. The IT guy cranked U2's "Mission Impossible" (My test tune!) and we were blown away by the fact that it filled the store with great sound. We could also see the bass unit dancing.

They're not high-end by any means (Genius SP-HF500A)but damn, they sounded GOOD! The problem is as soon as I plugged them in at home the sound was muddy and distorted, and I can't achieve the same visual action in the bass.

I'm running an HP Compaq Presario (AMD Sempron Processor 3200+) 1.79 GHz, 960 MB RAM. I beleive my sound drivers are updated so I'm wondering if a sound card problem can have that effect? (I'm not sure if they can deteriorate slowly, or if they just work or don't work.)

These really did sound terrific out-of-the box in the store but are performing nowhere even remotely close to the same way at home.

Any suggestions you guys might have for trouble-shooting would be appreciated.

Thx.

L.E.

They are not the best place to audition speakers (or TV's). Plus lots of computer speaker manufacturers go for slick looks over build and sound quality. Theres only so much cheap molded plastic housing and paper cones can do. The best 2.0 set of powered speakers I know of are Audioengine 2's (or 5's). They consistently get good review from audiophile sites around the web.

It wasn't a "Big Box" store, although it was large, and we hooked up a number of sets so I had great points of reference.

The speakers were, and are, great for my purposes - I'm not shopping here, what I hoping for is some suggestions as to possible causes for them performing poorly on my Windows XP.

Reply 3 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

Period. That's the first problem. Try another brand like the audioengine which has been suggested.

The PC sounds very bare bones too. Could you add a dedicated sound card perhaps instead of the built in one on the mobo? FWIW, reloading codecs won't solve the problem unfortunately. They might however let you hear different types of audio tracks though.

Reply 4 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

I have tried nine other sets this week.

I'd be surprized if you've ever actually heard this particular model. They blew the store staff away with the quality at the price point. At any rate, as I mentioned before, they are perfect for what I need them to do.

My issue is that two weeks ago cheezier speakers than this sounded great but now nothing works well. I am trying to pinpoint where the breakdown might be. The PC is older but I surf, watch movies and shows and listen to music on it, and it handles all that just fine. I will definitely get the techie to check out the sound card situation and cross my fingers!

I did notice that there was a massive difference beween using the windows media utility (Distortion and "fuzzy" output at every volunme level) and Realplayer. The realplayer has zero distortion at any volume level, but the depth of sound is reduced. Interesting.

Reply 5 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

I will give you that much. (For the record, I heard them, but didn't like them.)

Alas, if you shopped around a little more, you would find that the audioengine (and others) sound much, much better. Don't always equate 'loud' with 'must be good since it's loud'. [If so, Bose would be the preferred choice for audiophiles wink.]

Also Try VLC media player- just to give your system a spin away from the built in WMP. FWIW, there are very few types of audio files VLC cannot play.

Reply 6 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

I don't think they're around anymore, but if they were available I'm pretty sure they'd be $300 or so...Way out of my price range. I tried speakers up to $100...The Genius were $30.00 happy

That was a GREAT tip about the VLC media player. I've been running song tests between the three players and VLC sounds best by far...Now I'm not even sure if I need to go for the sound card upgrade...Couldn't hurt I guess.

It's a mystery to me why no Googling brought up the simple fix of trying a different media player. My cheezy speakers and I thank you very much!

Reply 7 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

Follow the link I posted above. The Audioengine 2's are 199 dollars a pair and they will blow away just about any other computer speaker in my opinion (and the opinion of lots of audiophile sites).

Reply 8 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

We would connect to some other audio source. I looked for what desktop that could be and didn't find a good match. BUT if the machine is working hard, audio distortions can occur.

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6122_102-510824.html may not sound like it applies at first but we did turn the corner and get the machine up to speed.

Reply 9 : Speakers - Excellent in store, TERRIBLE on my PC

Interesting suggestion, but since music sounded great on this PC two weeks ago (Before the one speaker died) I don't think I'm comfortable jimmying a fix. I've uninstalled and re-loaded the audio codecs and I'm out of ideas. I guess I'll get the sound card swapped out and see if that helps.

Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Several weeks ago I noticed changes in the appearance of certain Windows pages on my Dimension 4500 (XP) when they were opened. For example, the opening page of My Network Places ceased to display the blue panel listing Network Tasks etc. Similarly, the same change occurred with the opening pages of Control Panel, Recycle Bin, and My Computer, in each case the blue panel disappeared.. I suspect that the cause was an update of Windows XP. The corresponding pages open with the classic blue column on my Inspiron 8600 (XP). I would now like to reclaim the blue columns for these pages, please can someone tell me how this can be done?

Thyde, i got to the kelly page you are talking about and it seems that you downloaded a reg file. What did you do exactly to fix your problem? Did you download the enable file or the disable file? Please explain further. Much appreciated. Thanks.

Reply 5 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

frozen12, I'm assuming that your having the same or similar problem as Thyde had. Go to the link below and scroll down to line 78 (left column) "Common Tasks View - Disable or Enable" and click on the underscored "Enable" to download a reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. After you do this restart your computer.

Thanks for responding Tufenuf. I don't want to be a pain but what exactly does this reg file do? My problem is the appearance of my WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER window (XP). It has suddenly changed to a very basic theme and I was thinking that maybe this is along the same lines as what Thyde was experiencing. Again, I don't mean to be a pain-I am just paranoid about what I do to my cp because I want to avoid having to reformat over something like this. Thanks again for your help.

Reply 7 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Using something like ImageShack or similar?

It would be unusual I think for just one Control Panel window to open in a different style to others, so maybe your problem is different.

For your information the reg files at Kelly's Corner and other similar sites change the Windows Registry file. This Registry is like a database of settings and other system information that Windows relies on to perform its work. The registry is crucial to how Windows operates and any changes made can have significant effects on the system.

The reg file changes just a small part, or key, in the registry. It merges the new information into it, either overwriting existing information for that particular registry key or value, or if the key/value does not exist, by creating that key or value. It is recommended that before changes are made the registry be backed up fully, (by exporting it), or by creating a System Restore point, (Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore). If you just export it, you need to understand how to import it back outside of the Windows environment in case a corrupt registry stops Windows from loading properly.

With Kelly's Corner registry files they have been tested and are generally safe, but users make use of them at their own risk.

Markflax, thanks for your post. I am not using ImageShack or anything similar.

It is a little strange that Windows Security Center is the only window that looks different (at least as far as I can tell.) I am going to hold off on the registry thing as I do not believe that is a fix to this problem. I like to solve these things but I guess sometimes mysteries go unsolved. I am open to any other thoughts though.

Reply 9 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

MarkFlax-I am sorry. I now realize that you were asking me to supplie a screen print by using ImageShack ro something similar. I didn't get that at first. I will try to do that. Thanks again.

MarkFlax, I think I figured out this imageshack thing. Here is a link to the picture of my Windows Security Center. Tell me what you think. Take care.

http://img405.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wscwindowob2.jpg

Reply 11 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Although the image is a little small, I could see enough to get the idea.

Some questions for you;

1] I notice the header bar on the Security Center window is a 2-tone gray color. The normal Windows XP default color scheme is blue for the header bar.

Have you changed your Display Properties Themes to a different theme, or Appearance to different colors and font colors? Sometimes changing these can cause 'interesting' results. What happens if you return to the Windows XP theme?

2] I also notice that all your security settings are set to Off. This means you appear to have no firewall, no anti-virus, and no Windows Updates.

If that is right then your computer is susceptible to attacks from hackers, viruses and trojans, and any of those can attack your Windows settings and change them.

Mark

Reply 12 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Hey MarkFlax. Thanks for posting back. First off, yes I changed the theme to silver. I took your suggestion and changed everything back to default-this did not resolve the issue. Second, everything in security center is actually turned on. I think you might not have seen it because it is a small picture (new to imageshack) but everything is indeed turned on. Still open to thoughts and suggestions. Take care, Frozen.

Reply 13 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Yep they do look like Off, but I agree that's probably me.

Well frankly, I'm stumped and I don't know what else to suggest. Especially if this is the only window that's affected.

If it is a display problem then I would suggest you look at your graphics card and driver. Perhaps upgrade the driver, but if it is only this window then that is unlikely. Do you have problems playing videos?

If it is a system setting somewhere, then again why just the one window? A system setting is more difficult because it could mean attempting to repair system files with the System File Checker using sfc /scannow . Below are a couple of articles that explain SFC and when it might be used in more detail;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3281204.php
You may need the original XP CD to carry this out.

The next escalation step if that failed would, perhaps, be a Repair Install. This would be done by booting up from the XP CD and performing a repair install which repairs the Windows/System32 folder contents and other files. Personal files and documents are not lost, although I would not take that chance and would back everything up first. But some installed software may break and would have to be re-installed. More details here;
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

That's all I can think of at the moment. Perhaps others here will have better ideas.

Mark

Reply 14 : Change in Appearance of Windows Pages

Hey Mark. Well we tried. I am not too concerned about it. This does not seem to have any bearing on how my system is working so maybe I just have to let this one go. I love to figure these things out (kind of like a puzzle) but it might be time to just move on with my life. Thanks for trying.

Hi. I was facing the same problem and searching for the solution I chanced upon this discussion.Though I haven't chanced upon a solution, I've found that the problem occurs after a particular Microsoft critical Update which comes as part of most Anti virus software update like McAfee, Escan or Quick Heal. I found that this change of MS Security Centre theme happened on computers which had an Antivirus software installed.

Microsoft Excel Activation

We need Microsoft Excel for our home business. We do not need anything else but Excel. I have found the standalone program for sale for around $65. I see reading the details it can only be installed on one computer. Which is fine because we only needed on one computer. What I am wondering is what happens when I replace the computer or something. Am I not going to be able to reinstall the program? I am wondering if I would be better off paying the money to get the whole Microsoft office program that I can install three times. I just hate to spend the money to buy programs that I do not need. I am looking forward to your advice.

keyboard replacement, worth it?

I'm not sure I should call support on this... but my X key falls off sometimes, once every two weeks, approx.

I snap it back in, and its all good, but eventually it goes off again...

My warranty expires in August, I don't know if a keyboard replacement is worth it, I wouldn't like to fall for a "support horror story" and end up with a messy keyboard...

The Fink and Dr. Dre

I understand the issue of the court case, but wondering why the officer wouldn't want EVERYONE to know what he told them? If I'd have been there and told them the same, I'd not be wanting privacy but be glad if what I'd said was EVERYWHERE. What bothers me is the policeman isn't standup proud for what he said, the stand he took on the matter.

As for expectation of privacy at a concert, the court made a proper ruling. I'm just sorry the policeman didn't use the information release to stand proud for what he'd promised to do if they ran the video.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Mich-Supreme-Court-sides-with-apf-741226385.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=3&asset=&ccode=

Brown was a high-ranking police official at the time, and warned concert organizers that power would be turned off if they showed a sexually explicit video at the Joe Louis Arena. The conversation was taped and later used in behind-the-scenes tracks on a popular DVD highlighting the "Up in Smoke" national concert tour that also featured rappers Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.

Brown had argued that his privacy was violated by the video, but Dr. Dre's lawyer Herschel Fink said there was no privacy when police were doing their job.

Fink said Saturday that the court's decision was more narrow than he expected, with the ruling dealing only with the event instead of broader privacy issues, but "as I said in an e-mail to Dre, 'We'll take it.'"

Brown said Saturday that he was disappointed but respects the court's decision. He sid he understood that the case hinged on his expectation of privacy, but he said he asked for a private discussion and to have the cameras turned off.

Reply 1 : The Fink and Dr. Dre

If I understand this right, his confrontation with the organizers, telling them what would happen if they showed that sexually explicit video, was taped, then included on a DVD.

That was obviously done as a reprisal and to show him up in some way, perhaps as "Officialdom gone mad" or whatever.

Used in that context, I think he has a point.

Deus Ex 1 is another league, but part 2 is still a hell of a lot better than some of the other crap on the market.

I also sometimes wonder whether the cult-success of part 1 might have been a case of 'fresh new game-angle at the right time'.

Reply 9 : Deus Ex 3

That might very well be Kade Storm, but if they just took the mechanics from DE1 and went from there it would already be awesome.

What they did with DE2 was straying too far from the original concept and dumbing things down so much that any of the serious fans didn't care much about it. All it was was an ok shooter with implants tacked on.

I really hope this is gonna be some kind of back to the roots revival thing, but if it comes out for consoles I'm very pessimistic - usually consoles mean dumbing down controls and game mechanics so that the greater public can play the game without, and since the greater public wants easily accesible games .... they'll have to make it so the player doesn't need to be thinking too much.

I'm glad to be away from this Horse hockey I'll run Linux thank you very much . BTW Microsoft was STARTED using STOLEN technology !!!Talk about piracy!

Reply 4 : does windows 7 detect pirated software?

To be fair, there's no real evidence to support that claim. I'm aware of the theory that Bill Gates swiped a BASIC compiler when he was interning at DEC, but I have yet to see anyone who can offer up any proof of it. After all, the legend is that they took said BASIC compiler, and weren't even sure if it would run as they were on the plane to the meeting to sell it.

And of course they bought QDOS, which AFAIK, was a legit reverse engineering of CP/M. Telling IBM that they had an OS when they didn't is fraudulent, but it's not selling stolen software.

I just hate how people get this idea that Microsoft was this rags to riches story. Bill Gates' father is quite wealthy, and so it's not like if Microsoft had failed early on that Gates and Company would be panhandling on the street corner. Where exactly do people think they came up with the $50K (in 1980s dollars no less, so probably like a quarter million today) they used to buy QDOS?

In any case, please just tell me you're not going to turn into one of those annoying self-righteous Linux users, who can't turn down a SINGLE opportunity to espouse the greatness of Linux. Doing things like trolling Windows support forums, finding people having problems, and posting a rather useless message along the lines of, "I never have this problem with Linux!" I've nothing against Linux, used it off and on since around 1995. It's a nice system in a lot of respects, and in plenty of others it seems perpetually rough around the edges to put it mildly. I've lost count of how many times people have proclaimed some year the year of Linux on the desktop. Maybe if Apple hadn't come up with Mac OS X, which combines almost all the good aspects of Linux (via the FreeBSD base) with the detail oriented Apple UI, that may have actually happened 5-6 years ago.

In any case, be happy with Linux if that's what works for you. Just remember that it's not for everyone, and unless you have something more to contribute than "I like Linux", you probably shouldn't be in a Windows support forum. There is a nice Linux forum here however.

Using Post card to diagnose??

Trying to learn how to use a new Post card I just got. It appears to be a decent one. It has 8 LED lights and shows 4 codes such as 0061 Post code. The LED's are +12v, -12v, +5v, +3.3v, CLK, IRDY, FRAME, RESET. During boot all the LED's light but RESET. The IRDY & FRAME are intermittent. The RESET never lights. At end of boot RESET, IRDY & FRAME are out. Right now I'm more concerned with the codes as I'm troubleshooting an old XP machine that will not allow me to install Windows XP. It gets 2/3 installed and locks up everytime. After 6 boots with the card in the PCI slot I got 6 different codes at the end of the boot. I get quite a few during boot but I understand the only one I need to be concerned with is the final one or whenever the card code locks at any particular one code. Here are the codes and also can you explain why 4 code numbers and are the first 2 on left the only ones I need be concerned with. Any help would be appreciated as I'm new to POST cards usage.

Doesn't the manual say anything about the codes? You are in the computer business or just doing this for fun? I have built a few computers in my time but have never use the post card. My method is elimination by substitutions.

Reply 2 : Using Post card to diagnose??

I'm just a guy who has taught myself through news groups and support forums how to work on computers. I'm actually quite computer savvy today but the post card is something new to me. The manual gives the bios codes but very little other information such as the card has 4 LCD windows showing the codes but the booklet only shows 2 digit codes so what do the other 2 on the card show? [] [] [] [] Consider the 4 previous brackets as each an LCD on the card. The 2 to the left I think show the code but what are the 2 on the right showing? Also the LED lights showing the voltages an such what do they mean and how do you read them. During boot some of them flash on and off and at end of boot 3 of them are unlit. The purpose of the Post card is to save yourself a lot of time while diagnosing your computer. Changing parts out until you find the problem is just more work so I want to learn how to properly use the Post card.

Also, I just noticed that when I right click on an image to set it as a destop backgroung, Windows will not set it as a new background.

Reply 4 : Win7 will not display or save desktop theme...

Try this. Create a new user and log in on that new account. Do things work there?

Reply 5 : Win7 will not display or save desktop theme...

Well, I created a new profile and it works. Thank you. Question...I am the only one that uses the desktop (wife likes her laptop). How do I get my old account settings to this new account. Do I just delete my old account and rename the new one with the old account name. If so, would my settings transfer (new account did not show my network drive or printer)? Or do I need to start all over again. Thanks again for your help.

Reply 6 : Win7 will not display or save desktop theme...

Sorry if I write badly here. The issue of corrupt profiles are legendary. Not only that, Microsoft has never published a tool to repair them (that we know of.)

If you google "Windows 7 corrupt profiles" you find plenty of discussions but no cures short of abandoning the account that has problems.

DO NOT DELETE ACCOUNTS! Doing so finds folk that forgot to backup or copy files over to the new account or WORSE!!! (what's worse? think no backups ever.)

Sorry but you've been stung by a long standing Windows annoyance.

Bob,
Thank you for answer. Explains a lot. I Googled and found this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile. Will give it a shot and see what happens. Will back up my user settings before trying. Learn something new every day. Thanks again.

Reply 8 : Win7 will not display or save desktop theme...

The title is "fix a corrupted profile" but the article never fixes the corrupted profile! It abandons the account!
Bob

Reply 9 : Win7 will not display or save desktop theme...

OK!! FIXED but Windows code is still the root cause!! This equivalent problem has bugged me for MONTHS! I have four Windows 7 machines of very similar architecture. Two have this problem and one began emulating this yesterday.

RECAP: Every time windows opens there is an Unsaved Theme. No existing saved themes seem to be used thou they are functional and saved in the user directory. The usaved theme is similar to my saved theme but intermmitently it loses the slide show. Displaying only the last picture used. BUT, it always loses the presentation, setting it to Stretched as opposed to Fit.

This fix DOES NOT involve any Upgrade (clearly that is only a patch and the problem can return).

After setting everything how I wanted it and saving that theme. Through REGEDIT I looked at the Control Panel/Desktop in CURRENT USER and noted all of the settings. I then went to HKEY USERS and set ALL of the sub functions that contained similar Desktop data to the same settings. Two were NOT equivalent!.

Problem eliminated! Only Save themes are used after reboot and so far it appears stable.

Caveat: There are only Two Users on my machine, both are me. The newer one was created to investigate whether a new profile, identically structured, contained the issue, which it did not.

I repeated this on all machines and it appears to have fixed the problem. I don't think the source creator is fixed as this is clearly a coded Windows issue, but the problem is fixed without reinstallation or new profile creation, and it is repeatable.

keyboard shortcut

I have Windows 7 on my computer. Generally in order to shut down the computer you have to click Start and "shut down". Does anyone know of a KEYBOARD shortcut (i.e., where you would press a combination of keys) for shutting down the computer? Thank you very much. user470

Should be the same for you.

WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

Dear All,

Does anyone know of some device that would enable me to WiFi stream media directly from an AV input source (say: cable box or DVD player or VCR) to the home WiFi network (to be received by other devices on the Network, such as a WiFi-enabled TV set, or a Laptop)?

Just to ensure clarity of my inquiry: the device's input should be -- at least 3*RCA (Audio L/R + Composite Video) or -- even better for the Video part -- S-Video or RGB or even HDMI, while its output should go to an Ethernet J45 (LAN) connector as well as to WiFi.

Thanks in advance for an enlightening reply,

Eric

Reply 2 : WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

Thanks smakh, but this answer is too laconic even for me ...

Could you please elaborate?

Thanks again,

Eric

Reply 3 : WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

for you to use Google, or your favorite search engine if different, to search for Place Shifting.

I just did and found a number of hits, which may or may not take you further in this.

Good luck.

Mark

Reply 4 : WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

Thanks for the clarification Mark.

Seemingly however (in view of the answer) my inquiry was misunderstood:

1. PlaceShifting, as implemented by SlingMedia (and other competing products) takes indeed an AV input but -- eventually -- broadcasts its signal to the "Cloud" (Internet), making it accessible from anywhere in the World, to whoever might know the credentials for the specific box;
Such an approach has at least two problems:

a. Media purchased (by license) for PERSONAL use may become accessible to "the World", thus infringing on the license's clauses;

b. The quality of the signal received eventually, is dependent on the upload/download speed of the connection available to the Internet (both at the "Sling" side and at the Viewer side), which is mostly MUCH lower than the average speed used on a WiFi LAN between the Router and the various items (including the Sling Box and the -- possibly WiFi-enabled -- TV-Set) connected to it.

2. The type of device I am looking for should stream on the [WiFi] LAN and ONLY on it, and for the TV-Set to "see" the stream there should be no need of a PC in ON status on the LAN - just the device, the Router and the TV-Set itself.

Hope this does a better job of expressing the type of device needed.

Thanks again for your help,

Eric

Wireless HDMI

Now you need one more thing. The box you get the inputs encoded to HDMI. Greffen did that before and the downside is the price.

Can be done but I found that once folk learned how much this would cost, they either screamed they were being ripped or that how could such sell at that price.

I can answer part of that. Where there is a need.
Bob

Reply 6 : WiFi Media Streaming DIRECT from AV Input

Hello Bob,

Thanks for pointing this one out for me.

Regretfully however, Gefen's (I guess that's the company you actually meant) Wireless HDMI is NOT what I had in mind ...

For one thing, Gefen's solution needs dedicated transmitter AND receiver; my request is for a transmitter that would be a member of the local [WiFi] LAN, allowing ANY other member of the LAN have access to its data.

On the other hand, Gefen's solution is HDMI only (possibly component too); my need is for a device where these options would be great, but support for the more basic Composite input would exist as well.

So ... the search is on ...

Thanks again Bob and Happy Weekend,

Eric

R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

As topic says. What is the best browser out there for battery life on an r2? How does ie9 do? Etc...

Cheers!

Reply 1 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

I don't know about the best since I don't use IE at all. But with Chrome. the discharge rate is always lower than Firefox.

Reply 2 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

+1 for Chrome..just my preference.

Reply 3 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

im just guessing, but the one that takes up the least amount of memory or resources would prob be best for pure battery life.

Its up to you to see which one does =)

If im not mistaken, chrome is slightly faster load times, but it uses more memory than Fox or IE. I remember reading that somewhere not to long ago.

Reply 4 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

I'm siding towards chrome. Especially with IE9s release.

Reply 5 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

Chrome, of course

Reply 6 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

Chrome, and it's very nice on small screens.

Reply 7 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

+1 for chrome because i use it though the way it is programmed to have each tab as a separate process task may or may not be as power hungry on the battery as having all tabs under 1 process task like firefox.

Reply 8 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

I use Chrome but a lot of people starting to use Opera now

Reply 9 : R2, what is the best browser for battery life?

I use Opera, best browser I ever have used. With opera turbo mode on auto and using my phone as router on the road. Its dead quick and uses little resources as long as you keep your tabs under control

Office 2010

Is there a forum for how to use OneNote? For some reason I can't find it on MS forums. So - If no one is interested in this subject, could they possibly point me to a forum that is? Interested? Wasting a lot of time - thinking it could be useful. Not a technical problem - just confusion over how the software works. Thanx.

quick notes:

pros:
  • feels great on the pad.
  • very solid when closed.
  • stand mode works just fine.
  • flipped open, feels fine
  • nice leather finish.
  • looks fantastic.

con:
  • very "chemical-y" smell. if you were expecting the smell of leather..you will be disappointed. lol. when you put your nose to it, all you smell are chemicals.
  • might want to pick up some sort of leather protector to protect it from hand sweat/salt, but it may not be an issue. idk.

bottom line: keeper and winner.

Okay, I have to add the review of this new app. I think anyone who enjoys RSS Readers will want to have on their iPad. Brand new app that just launched today:

This app uses Google Reader to syncronize your RSS feeds. Pics after the jump. Not only is its design elegant, and fluid, but it can also work just like the photos app (spreading fingers to see the contents of your RSS feeds). You can save the articles to your Instapaper or Read It Later accounts...Twitter or a number of other social networking sites. I think this is my new favorite app, because it makes it so easy to work with and follow your favorite feeds. The integration into Instapaper is also shown in the pictures. the combination of Reeder + Instapaper (reading articles you save offline) are musts, in my opinion. they're too good individually to pass up...and even moreso together.

Apple camera kit for the iPad.

The camera kit was one of the main reasons I bought an iPad and it does not disappoint. With two separate adapters (USB or SD) you have a great way to use the iPad as your on the go picture studio. Plug the adapter into the iPad connect your USB cable or SD card and the iPad automatically launches the photo program so you can import from the device at full resolution. You can choose to keep the pictures on the camera/SD card or clear them so you can take more photos. Once they are imported you can view your pictures on the iPad screen and delete any that you do not like or use an app (not included ) to edit them. When you get home simply sync to your computer and download the pictures. Its a great way to quickly view, edit and share your pictures on the go.

I tested out the kit on a recent day out tubing with friends. I had a blast taking pictures with my Nikon D40x while trying to balance myself as my friend tossed the kids around on the tube. I ended up taking about 100 pictures and deleted obviously bad shots as the kids were climbing back on the tube after being tossed. When we took a break so the kids could swim for a while I tested out the SD adapter. It took a few minutes to download the pictures (10MP in RAW format) and then I was able to pull them for viewing. While I thought I had all the bad shots deleted, once I had them on the larger screen I deleted another 10 pictures that were slightly out of focus. I was then able to call everyone into the boat and show off for a couple of minutes before jumping in the water myself.

My friend wanted some pictures of his boat so I carefully waded in the shallows and took a few shots before we headed out for another round of tubing. This time I took almost 100 additional pictures and when we stopped again I tried out the USB adapter. Maybe I wasn't paying attention this time but it seemed to me that the USB was faster as transferring the photos. This time I had a little more fun and opened a picture in the Photogene app. I used the pencil filter and my friend went nuts for it. I also used the SD adapter and a miniSD to SD kit to swipe photos from my friend's cameras. That took a little extra effort as I had not pushed the miniSD card in far enough. Once I fixed it the pictures transferred just fine.

I plan on taking the iPad and camera kit to Alaska soon and will fill the iPad up in no time as I use it to view photos and clear out the SD card so i can take more pictures. For me the camera kit is my favorite accessory.

I'm definitely going to look into that camera kit. I picked up the VGA adapter, but haven't tired it out yet.

Tried it out yet? I was thinking about picking one up for presentations.

I recently took a trip to Alaska and the camera kit worked great in helping me whittle down the over 2000 RAW shots I took to about 1200. In this case the majority were on a moving bus or train so I took tons of pictures trying to avoid glare and motion blur. Its hard to tell how good a shot really is on the small screen of a camera but pretty easy on the iPad. I actually saw more iPads being used by people on the trip than notebooks. I also sold a few amateur photographers on the iPad once they saw what I was doing with it.
